Alcohol is one of the world’s most popular intoxicants with roots dating 13,000 years back [1]. It is also a widely socially accepted stimulant in large parts of the world although usage can raise debate.
But how well do alcohol and spirituality mix? What are the spiritual implications of consuming alcohol? And what would a spiritual perspective on alcohol be?
A Spiritual Perspective on Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol and Spirituality – A Free-Will Choice
First of all, we as souls came to this Earth to utilize our free will. So consuming alcohol can spiritually be considered a free-will choice.
No doubt alcohol has the potential to enhance certain experiences and can also function as a social lubricant. Taking part in activities that involve consuming alcohol can definitely be one of many ways for our soul to explore life on Earth. And most souls after all came to Earth to explore physical life with all its facets – positive and negative.
From the perspective of the soul, all experiences are considered valuable. Even the ones we consider bad. They all benefit the soul’s growth and expansion which is of high priority to the soul.
Before looking deeper at the Spiritual Impacts of Consuming Alcohol and how it affects our energy, it is important to briefly touch on the negative physical implications of alcohol. Because there are many. If you wish, you can skip this part and go to the spiritual perspective by clicking here.
Physical Implications
It is very well documented that excessive alcohol consumption has negative health impacts.
According to the WHO:
- “The harmful use of alcohol is a causal factor in more than 200 disease and injury conditions.”
- “Worldwide, 3 million deaths every year result from harmful use of alcohol. This represents 5.3% of all deaths.”
- “There is a causal relationship between harmful use of alcohol and a range of mental and behavioural disorders, other noncommunicable conditions and injuries.”

The list of diseases and conditions is long and includes:
– Liver disease
– Heart disease
– High blood pressure
– Anemia
– Brain and Nervous System Problems including Depression, Anxiety, and Psychosis.
– Cancer
– Stroke
– Seizures
– Gout
– Infections
– Digestive Problems
– Impaired sleep quality
– Weight gain
So, if you plan on living a long and healthy life with sustained vitality in your later years, excessive alcohol consumption is not recommended.
It becomes less clear-cut when it comes to a moderate to low alcohol intake. Some research suggests positive effects of a moderate to limited intake [5]. Other research finds that even a limited intake of alcohol can harm your health. One study with 25,378 participants concluded, “No safe dose of alcohol for the brain was found” and “Current ‘low risk’ drinking guidelines should be revisited to take account of brain effects” [6], [7].
Besides the direct physical implications of consuming alcohol, it increases the risk of accidents. In 2022, more than 11,000 were killed in the US in motor vehicle accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers. This accounts for 30% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States [8].
Alcohol and crime are also related. In one in three cases of violent crime in the US, alcohol was involved [9].
So based on the health perspective and statistics there is reason to caution. But what about the spiritual perspective on alcohol? This we will have a look at below.
The Spiritual Impacts of Consuming Alcohol
The amount of alcohol consumed and the frequency of consumption of course matters. Further, it varies to some extent how people react to alcohol. And lastly, people go through different phases of life where alcohol can play different roles and affect them differently. With that being said, there are some common traits when it comes to alcohol and spirituality.
Lowers our Vibration/Energy Frequency
It seems to be very clear that alcohol lowers our vibration. Maybe you feel lifted during alcohol consumption but at an energetic level, your frequency declines. It can take a while before your vibration is fully restored. Some sources mention up to 14 days before fully restored. If you are a frequent drinker, there is a risk your vibration is permanently lower than it could be.
This is not desirable for many reasons. A high vibration is linked to many positive effects. It is much easier to attract positive situations and outcomes with a high vibration. This is one of the reasons we normally strive to raise our vibration. To learn more about this, you can read this article 13 Powerful Ways to Raise Your Vibration.
In contrast, a reduced vibration has the opposite effect. It becomes harder to attract what we want in our lives and we are more likely to become a match to undesired low-vibrating situations.
The effects of a lowered vibration caused by alcohol:
– It becomes more challenging to manifest what you want in your life.
– You are more likely to attract undesirable, low-vibration situations.
– The connection to our soul and inner wisdom weakens.
The last I will explain in more detail in the next section.
Weakens the Connection to Our Higher Self and Soul
When our vibration declines, which is an effect of alcohol, it becomes harder to listen to our soul’s guidance. Our soul continuously guides us. This can happen in many ways but often it is very subtle. For instance through our intuition. The more in tune we are with our soul the easier it becomes to make good decisions. Our soul has a higher perspective on many things and knows the right path for us. This is particularly the case if you have an old soul or are a lightworker. When our frequency is high, we will often intuitively know what direction to move, and what decisions will serve us well.
By drinking alcohol it is like the receiver of our souls’ guidance becomes weaker. Not only when we drink but also for some time after. Instead, we have to rely more on our ego. Our ego has less perspective and is more prone to fear. And fear is a major factor that keeps people stuck in life.
In this sense, you can say alcohol messes with our internal guidance system. But I sense that alcohol in general brings our whole system a bit (or a lot) out of balance energetically. The more in tune and purified your mind and body are, the more you will probably be able to feel this effect.
Can Attract Spirits or Entities
I have heard about several instances where people apparently have attracted a spirit when they went drinking and the spirit attached itself to the person. Heavy drinking, drugs, or disease can weaken our energy field and aura making it possible for spirits to attach themselves to us.
In one instance, a medium had been contacted because a man experienced strange things happening in his house. It turned out that he had also started drinking more than he used to. On weekdays he had started to drink considerable amounts of red wine, which was not normal to him. The medium found out a spirit had followed him back after a drinking session in the city. This spirit was the spirit of a deceased person who had a drinking habit. Now the spirit had attached itself to the man and this explained his new desire for red wine. The medium removed the spirit, peace returned to his home, and the unexplained desire for alcohol vanished.
To my knowledge, the above is not something that happens to many people but it is still worth mentioning.
Can Suppress Feelings – Avoiding healing the root cause
Some people turn to alcohol when life gets challenging. They use alcohol as a way to deal with painful feelings. Or, actually it is a way of not dealing with them. This can seem tempting but it is a bad strategy with consequences. As the saying goes “You need to feel it to heal it”. So drinking to not feel your feelings will only delay the healing process. Feelings that are not dealt with and felt can in some cases ultimately manifest as a physical disease.
When we suppress something emotionally it can cause a disturbance in our energetic field/aura. At some point, if not dealt with, it can then ultimately manifest physically as a disease. In order words, not an advised strategy!
Alcohol and Spirituality – Energy Work
It should be obvious not to do energy work like healing, clairvoyance, mediumship, various readings, etc. under the influence of alcohol or after alcohol consumption. Maintaining a clear and focused mind is essential when doing energy work. We need to be in our best position to observe and handle whatever we may encounter during a session.
Alcohol – Used to Keep the Masses Under Control?
One theory says that alcohol has been used to keep the masses under control. With “masses” referring to the general population and “in control” by the people in power.
I believe there could be some truth in that theory. If the people in power suppress, control, and take advantage of the general population, alcohol could be a way to support this. Alcohol can make a miserable life more tolerable. Alcohol at the same time weakens our connection to the soul and inner wisdom. This means we are less likely to stand up against injustice. We lose the bigger perspective and get caught up in everyday life. It can be compared to “Soma” in the famous Novel “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley.
Alcohol and Spiritual Awakening
During a spiritual awakening, it is common for preferences regarding alcohol to undergo transformation. Some people take a break from drinking while they look inward and get in touch with their soul. Others simply don’t like how it feels or tastes anymore.
During a spiritual awakening, we will in general raise our frequency and for some, this does not match with drinking alcohol. For others, they become more aware of the impact alcohol has and become more conscious about drinking. Then there are of course the ones that use alcohol as a way to flee and suppress, which was covered in an earlier section. This is not recommended and will only delay the process.
Your relationship to alcohol can also vary during different stages of spiritual awakening. Maybe at some points, it feels okay to have some alcohol and at other times it feels best to refrain completely.
My spirit guides have guided me from time to time concerning alcohol. Their guidance was different depending on what was going on in my life and how the alcohol would impact me. At some point, they advised me to stay clear of alcohol while another time they were more relaxed and just told me it would slow down my progress and learning.
Conclusion – Alcohol and Spirituality, does it mix?
I believe it is a personal decision and choice how you handle alcohol and spirituality. Excessive alcohol consumption can undoubtedly have negative consequences while moderate to low consumption is a bit more unclear. At an energetic level, it however seems clear that alcohol lowers our vibrational frequency. This has adverse consequences including:
– Can make it more challenging to manifest what we desire in life.
– Makes it more difficult to connect to our soul and inner wisdom.
– Weakens our inner guidance system.
– Can slow down learning and spiritual progress.
Further, alcohol can:
– Weaken our energy field which in some cases can attract spirits.
– If alcohol is used to suppress feelings it can have negative consequences.
Whether it is advised to drink or not will also depend on where you are in your personal and spiritual development. But drinking will make it more difficult to connect with your inner wisdom through your soul. This is a good argument to at least be mindful of your drinking habits. When it comes to energy work, it doesn’t mix well with alcohol. Here you need to be fully present and focused in order to do the best possible job.
